Press coverage!

I'm pleased to say, we got some press coverage today... hopefully this trend will continue and expand.

You can have a quick shifty at what they have to say here:

  1. Hi Kent,

I think bringing the Tube to Streatham is an excellent idea. I'm sure it would help bring new jobs and regeneration to the area.

I saw that Chuka Umunna, Labour's Parliamentary Candidate, started a campaign some weeks ago calling for this very thing: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/bring-the-tube-to-streatham.html and that you yourself signed it.

Seeing that his petition has over 600 signatures already wouldn't it be a good idea for you to explicitly support his campaign?

I'm worried that by starting another one you may split support and nothing will change.

    Yours,

  2. Tom,

Yes, I've had comments from others that share your concerns and I think it is a good point.

I've responded to in in part here http://www.streathamtube.com/2009/11/letters-to-mps.html#comments

I am in 2 minds about this (particularly with regard to the petition).

On the one hand, it'd be a great pity to lose out on the great work Chuka has done (and you'll note I've linked to his petition on the top right of this site). On the other hand, he's a busy man, and he has many issues that he'll want to address - I on the other hand, have only one focus.

Further, and more importantly, I think it is better for the community if our politicians don't view this as something they need to compete with each other for. All local politicians I have spoken with recently do appear to have our district's best interest at heart, although on many issues they disagree as to how those interests can be best met. There doesn't seem to be that disagreement over bringing the Tube here, so, it is something I'd like them all to pull for, simply for the good of the community.

I'm still undecided as how to best proceed in the light of the above, and it is certainly something I'll be seeking guidance on from Chris Nicholson (Lib Dem) and Chuka Umunna (Labour) tomorrow and Thursday. They both have extensive experience campaigning, and I suspect they'll have some great ideas on how to deal with this.

That being said, if you have any ideas on how to handle this issue, I'm all ears.

In more general terms, I'm hoping that 2 things will happen in the near future:

    1) That I'll be able to produce some sort of mission statement/policy document that will offer some direction on how to deal with issues like these.

    2) That more and more members of the community will be stepping forward to take senior roles in this campaign so I'm merely one opinion amongst many when making these types of decisions (hey, I'm new at all this!).
